The Office of the Missouri Secretary of State is proud to sponsor the National History Day regional competition for the central Missouri area. Students in grades 6-12 from schools in Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau, Morgan, Osage, Pettis and Saline counties research topics related to a broad annual theme (NHD Theme Book). The 2020 National History Day theme is Breaking Barriers in History. Individually, or in groups, students carry out research in libraries, archives and museums, conduct oral interviews and visit historic sites.

Each year approximately 700,000 students from across the United States participate in National History Day. NHD contests are divided into Junior Division (grades 6–8) and a Senior Division (grades 9–12), with nine categories per division, which are grouped by presentation type and may include individual or group documentaries, exhibits, performances, websites or an individual historical paper (NHD Student Project Examples) .

The 2020 Central Missouri live regional contest is on February 27, 2020 at Columbia College. The top three finishers in each category represent the region in the National History Day in Missouri competition at the University of Missouri-Columbia in April 25, 2020. First and second place finishers at the National History Day in Missouri competition proceed to the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland-College Park from June 14-18, 2020.
